In 1987, at the age of 22, Gérard Bertrand inherited a 60-hectare vineyard from his father, who tragically died in a car accident. Initially, he attempted to balance a career as a professional rugby player with his responsibilities in the family wine business. However, he eventually left sports behind to dedicate himself to pioneering a new, eco-friendly approach to winemaking in Southern France.

From the Rugby Pitch to the Vineyards

Gérard Bertrand’s love for wine began in early childhood when, at just ten years old, he helped his father, Georges Bertrand, at the Château de Villemajou vineyard. Although Gérard pursued a professional sports career for a time—even serving as captain of the French rugby team—he returned to the family estate in 1987 following his father's tragic passing to fulfill his father's vision. His athletic grit, discipline, and strategic mindset helped him build a true wine empire.

Biodynamics – Respect for Nature and "Terroir"

Bertrand’s greatest achievement is his complete embrace of ecology and biodynamics (farming aligned with natural and cosmic cycles, without the use of any chemical fertilizers). He began experimenting with biodynamics in 2002 at the Cigalus estate, and today, all of his vineyards (spanning over 900 hectares) are certified with the Demeter label. This makes his company one of the largest producers of biodynamic wine in the world.
