The beginning
In 1987, at the age of 22, Gérard Bertrand inherited a 60-hectare vineyard from his father, who tragically died in a car accident. Initially, he attempted to balance a career as a professional rugby player with his responsibilities in the family wine business. However, he eventually left sports behind to dedicate himself to pioneering a new, eco-friendly approach to winemaking in Southern France.
Gérard Bertrand: The Visionary of Languedoc and the King of Biodynamic Wine
Gérard Bertrand is a name synonymous worldwide with the wine revolution of Southern France (the Languedoc-Roussillon region). A former professional rugby player, he is today one of the world's most influential winemakers, celebrated as a "pioneer of biodynamics" and the man who completely transformed how the world perceives Southern French wine.
From the Rugby Pitch to the Vineyards
Gérard Bertrand’s love for wine began in early childhood when, at just ten years old, he helped his father, Georges Bertrand, at the Château de Villemajou vineyard. Although Gérard pursued a professional sports career for a time—even serving as captain of the French rugby team—he returned to the family estate in 1987 following his father's tragic passing to fulfill his father's vision. His athletic grit, discipline, and strategic mindset helped him build a true wine empire.
Biodynamics – Respect for Nature and "Terroir"
Bertrand’s greatest achievement is his complete embrace of ecology and biodynamics (farming aligned with natural and cosmic cycles, without the use of any chemical fertilizers). He began experimenting with biodynamics in 2002 at the Cigalus estate, and today, all of his vineyards (spanning over 900 hectares) are certified with the Demeter label. This makes his company one of the largest producers of biodynamic wine in the world.
"Biodynamics is not a trend. It is a way to bring life back into the soil so that the grape can accurately express the character of its origin (terroir)." – Gérard Bertrand.
Most Famous Estates and Wines
Gérard Bertrand manages prestigious estates (Châteaux) across the finest appellations of Languedoc. His portfolio ranges from accessible, everyday wines to world-class masterpieces:
- Clos d'Ora: A mythical, powerful red wine born in a vineyard that is still plowed exclusively by horses to this day. It is a wine that symbolizes peace and spiritual harmony.
- Clos du Temple: The most famous and arguably the most expensive rosé wine in the world. Crafted in the Cabardès region, this masterpiece is aged in oak barrels and captivates with its complexity and elegance.
- Cote des Roses: A visually iconic series featuring a unique bottle base shaped like a rose in bloom. It is an immensely popular, fresh symbol of the Southern French lifestyle (Art de Vivre).
Philosophy and Achievements
- Bertrand’s philosophy is anchored by four core values: excellence, innovation, nature, and the French "Art de Vivre" (the art of living). He is also renowned for the annual jazz festival he hosts at his flagship headquarters, Château l'Hospitalet.
- Winemaker of the Year: Magazines like Wine Enthusiast and other prestigious publications have repeatedly named him Winemaker of the Year.
- Green Leader: His company serves as a prime example of how large-scale production can remain sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Today, Gérard Bertrand’s wines are highly esteemed by both novice enthusiasts and the strictest wine critics (such as Robert Parker and Jancis Robinson).
These are wines that tell the story of the Southern French sun, wind, and the Mediterranean Sea.
